The Nigerian fashion designer and founder of ready-to-wear label Maki Oh, whose work has been recognised by the likes of Vogue and Style.com, has recently been added to The Business of Fashion (BOF) exclusive BOF 500 List joining a cast of passionate, diverse and interesting characters who are redefining the global fashion industry.

Having previously earned herself an LVMH Prize nomination and grown into one of the biggest success stories to come out of Nigeria’s burgeoning fashion scene, her pieces have been described as a “sensual reinvention of traditional textiles” and “a lush mix of fabrications, incorporating traditional Yoruban adire dyeing techniques” which proves that her knack for continuously delivering timeless pieces is uncanny.

The Creative Director joins other Nigerian designers such as Reni Folawiyo of Alara, Omorele Akerele of StyleHouse Files and Tayo & Ayo Amusan of Perisians Group on this “professional index of the people shaping the global fashion industry”.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Amaka Osakwe received a BA in fashion studies from the Arts University Bournemouth after which she debuted her Autumn/Winter 2010 collection and introduced fashion lovers to her traditional, captivating fabrics.

The designer is not unknown to the celebrity world as fashions biggest names have donned her creations ranging from First Lady Michelle Obama, Solange Knowles, Lupita Nyongo’o and even featured clothing in Beyonce’s latest visual album ‘Lemonade’.

Maki Oh and more importantly Amaka Osakwe, are clearly a force to be reckoned with. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
