Barthélémy Toguo was born in 1967 in Cameroon and currently lives and works between Bandjoun and Paris.

The artist who studied at various prestigious schools during his youth (they include Ecole Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Ecole Supérieure d’Arts in Grenoble, France & the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany, Toguo is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been, and continues to be exhibited worldwide.

In 2008, he founded Bandjoun Station, an artist residence which focuses on artistic exchanges located in the highlands of Western Cameroon.

In his installations, performances, photography, and watercolor paintings, Barthélémy Toguo explores the regulated flow of people, merchandise, and resources between the developing world and the West. “Men or women are always potential exiles, driven by the urge to travel, which makes them ‘displaced beings’,” he has said. His monochromatic watercolor paintings act as a travel diary, with human-like forms transforming into animal shapes or abstract creatures—formally exploring the notion of border through the mixing of identities.
