The Lake, Tony Gum

Tony Gum is a South African “artist in learning”, who has been dubbed by Vogue International as the “Coolest Girl in Cape Town”. Tony is an artist and film student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where she “is producing a new prism through which to view African contemporary art, fashion and culture.” She’s also the co-founder of The Local Collective, a vlog consisting of Gum and her friend Philia and Tony Gum, which captures life in Cape Town, South Africa, by visually showcasing their views.

Gum, who was recently in Miami for Art Basel where she presented her narrative self portraits focusing on emergent South African-African-Global identity formation at PULSE Miami Beach on behalf of Christopher Moller Gallery, became widely known through her “Cola series” which featured an array of projected identities that she beautifully spliced together with the global iconic Coke brand.

The inspiration and message behind the Coca-Cola series, in creating an African representative for the popular beverage as Coke, is making the Coke brand uniquely African and creating an intimate link between the brand and the “people”. Gum is proud of her African heritage but she is equally happy to fuse with Western brands: she has the best of both worlds.
